This PhD research asks what gets lost when generative AI tools compress creative and intellectual process into polished, swift outputs — and explores whether a different relationship with these systems is possible. By building a personalised research infrastructure that uses the researcher’s own data to enrich the system, the investigation starts within their own practice. Core artefacts include ‘PhD-Live’, a public research environment that keeps doctoral thinking visible and in-process, alongside a suite of local AI tools (including a ‘Supervisor Bot’ and ‘Study Companion’). The work treats building as a primary mode of inquiry, using the gaps and failures of the infrastructure as much as its successes to ask what more exploratory, personalised relationships with AI might look like in education and creative practice.
