Kreminski, Max, and Michael Mateas. Reflective Creators. 2021. https://mkremins.github.io/publications/ReflectiveCreators_ICCC2021.pdf.
starting off reading this paper I wasn’t sure it was going to be the most relevant as it begins in the abstract talking about ‘casual creators’ whhich are a specific type of ‘creativity support tool’ (CST) that are autotelic, process focused (intrinsically motivated) that prioritise the aesthetic experience of the creative process rather than the end product. As this description does not really align with the things that I am building for this phd, which do have purposes in service of learning and research my immediate thought was that there is not a correlation here. However the abrasct goes onto to establish the core idea which is really interesting and inspiring for me to think about.
The authors introduce the idea of ‘process aethesitcs’ as mode of analysing different autotelic CSTs - specifically reflection - and how the presensce of this quality distinguishes it in many cases from a ‘casual creator’ type of CST. They distinguish this new type of tool as a ‘reflective creator’.
For me it’s the granular breakdown of how reflection can be embedded into these tools and the idea of CSTs themselves that I have not read much about so far and which is very influential to me. The idea of autotelic process focused tools is also interesting and although I would not describe either research-infrastructure or project-phd-live-platform in this way specifically, I think there is some aspects of this idea that are present, especially as I have a personal believe that learning should be something that some wants to do and have some intrinsic enjoyment
